It has to do with “knowing your customer”. Given that the SEC (and now China) are cracking down on illegal ICOs and have pretty much declared cryptocurrencies as securities, this is a way for Kin/Kik to ensure that they are doing things by the traditional book to avoid any future penalties or legal concerns, especially around selling to non-accredited US investors.
